When U.S. Army Captain Steve M. answered the call to serve, he never imagined the lifelong challenges that would follow. As a Recon Platoon Leader with the 180th Airmobile Assault Unit in Vietnam, Steve led soldiers through some of the war’s most dangerous conditions. During a combat mission in November 1969, he was critically injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded nearby. He sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, including injuries to both eyes that ultimately resulted in permanent blindness.

The blast also caused significant internal injuries, including damage to his bladder that required a urostomy and the long-term use of a suprapubic catheter. In the years since, Steve has continued to face complex medical challenges, including severe and progressive stricture disease.

Through it all, Steve has relied on the unwavering support of his wife and caregiver, Susan. Thanks to the generosity of Luke’s Wings’ donors, we have been able to coordinate regular flights for Steve and Susan, helping them travel to essential medical appointments and ensuring they can continue accessing the specialized care he needs. Their journey is a testament to resilience, devotion, and the lasting impact that compassionate support can have on the lives of wounded Veterans and their families.
