U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Jodi W. sustained a serious left hip injury while deployed to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. After more than six years of managing chronic pain and mobility challenges, her condition ultimately required a total left hip replacement.

Jodi’s non-medical attendant, Emily, has been a source of support for more than a decade. The two first met while deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2012, where Emily served as a nurse in the U.S. Navy and Jodi served as a physician assistant in the U.S. Army. The experiences they shared in uniform created a bond that continues to provide strength and support years later.

Thanks to the generosity of Luke’s Wings’ donors, Emily was able to travel to be at Jodi’s bedside during her surgery and recovery. Her presence provided not only practical assistance, but also the comfort, encouragement, and companionship that are so vital during a major medical procedure. Together, their story highlights the enduring connections formed through military service and the important role that loved ones play in the healing and recovery process.
