Fast Facts about Luke’s Wings

Our Mission

Luke’s Wings, a non-profit dedicated to the support of wounded, ill and injured service members, provides families with the means to visit during recovery and rehabilitation.

Our History

After observing the struggles of wounded warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Luke’s Wings was founded by Sarah Wingfield and Fletcher Gill in 2008. Operated as a strictly volunteer-based organization until 2012, Luke’s Wings has quickly grown to become a go-to organization for families in need. As of July 2020, Luke’s Wings has provided 1300 flights and has received recognition from White House Joining Forces Initiative and Delta Air Lines SkyWish Partnership.

Our Impact

Luke’s Wings was founded in 2008 after learning that the government does not always provide flights for family or loved ones to be bedside after a service member is injured. This is where Luke’s Wings steps in to fill the gap for the months and years ahead.

Families are completely on their own to travel back and forth between their everyday lives and their new reality. Luke’s Wings provides complimentary airfare to wounded, ill, and injured service members, veterans and their loved ones keeping military families connected during recovery and rehabilitation. These flights bring mental, physical, emotional, and financial support, empowering wounded service members to overcome challenges they face every step of the way.

Our Programs

Wounded Warrior Transportation Assistance Program – This primary program line provides wounded and injured service members and their loved ones complimentary airfare, keeping them physically connected during recovery and rehabilitation.

Special Operations Command Transportation Assistance Program – As a trusted resource of the Special Operations Command Care Coalition, this program provides flights for the families of service members who are injured while on special missions.

Veterans in Hospice Care Transportation Assistance Program – This program provides flights for the loved ones of veterans in hospice care so that they can be together in their final days.
