Caregivers play a vital role in the healing journey of our wounded service members and Veterans. Their love, patience, and dedication provide strength and comfort through every step of recovery and rehabilitation. But this incredible commitment can take a toll, making it essential for caregivers to prioritize their own well-being. By safeguarding their mental health, maintaining a balanced lifestyle, and leaning on support from others, they ensure they can continue providing the best care their loved ones deserve. The community around them can also help our Nation’s Heroes and their caregivers by donating to support wounded heroes’ recovery.

As a top military charity, Luke’s Wings understands the immense burdens our service members, Veterans, and caregivers face. That’s why we provide emergency flights, ensuring loved ones can be there when it matters most. We coordinate travel to and from 14 military hospitals, reuniting wounded, ill, and injured service members, Veterans, and first responders with their families during recovery and rehabilitation. Below, we offer self-care tips for caregivers of Veterans and wounded service members:

The Importance of Self-Care for Caregivers

Caring for a wounded service member or Veteran can be emotionally and physically taxing. Especially if the nature of their injuries requires around-the-clock attention and frequent doctor appointments. In such circumstances, caregivers risk burnout, chronic stress, and even health complications without proper self-care. In this light, prioritizing your well-being benefits not just you—it enables you to provide the best care for your loved one.

Caregiver self-care strategies include the following:

1. Prioritize Mental Health and Stability

In addition to the stresses of caring for a wounded loved one, caregivers may face a great deal of uncertainty and emotional distress in the course of their duties. Professional counseling can help caregivers process these difficult emotions, while a caregiver support group may provide a sense of shared understanding. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

2. Make Time for Hobbies and Interests

Again, it’s easy to lose sight of personal needs when those of someone else are a priority. However, even short breaks can make a big difference in reducing stress and improving mental clarity. Caregivers should try setting aside a few minutes each day to do something they enjoy (like reading, journaling, or listening to music).

3. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Caring for a loved one often leaves little time for a gym routine, but neglecting physical health can lead to fatigue and burnout. Eating  nutrient-rich meals can support their efforts, engage in daily movement, and establish a consistent sleep routine. Proper hydration, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices can also help manage stress and anxiety.

4. Accept Support from Others

Caregivers may feel isolated due to their responsibilities, but accepting help can lighten their load. They can find assistance through friends, family, or Veteran charity organizations in preparing a meal, providing respite care, or running an errand. Even small acts can serve as a reminder that nobody has to do this alone.

Caregivers in the DMV can turn to Luke’s Wings in this effort. Recently, our team had the pleasure of co-hosting a Galentine’s Day event at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with DARCARS Automotive Group. We loved celebrating with the incredible military service members receiving care and their families, during which we shared self-care kits donated by DARCARS. These events are special opportunities for caregivers to find support and build community.

5. Celebrate Small Wins

Wound recovery and chronic conditions are often long and unpredictable journeys with highs and lows. Recognizing and celebrating small victories (a milestone in physical therapy, a good day after a tough week, or sharing a heartfelt moment) can make the process more hopeful. Acknowledging progress keeps morale high and reminds caregivers why their role is so meaningful.

How You Can Help Support Caregivers and Their Loved Ones

Military families must make sacrifices to be by the side of their recovering heroes. Luke’s Wings helps ease their burden by providing complimentary flights for families of injured service members so they can stay connected when it matters most. But we can’t do this alone—generous donations make our mission possible.
