Luke’s Wings to provide flights for wounded warriors and their loved ones during the Travis Mills Foundation Veterans Retreat Alpha Week and Caregiver Week!
Washington, DC – Since 2008, Luke’s Wings has provided complimentary airfare to wounded service members and their loved ones during recovery and rehabilitation. During his recovery, Luke’s Wings was able to support one very special warrior, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, who eventually started his own foundation to benefit and assist combat-injured veterans – the Travis Mills Foundation (TMF). Over the years, both Luke’s Wings and TMF have become deeply rooted in the military community, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting warriors and their loved ones throughout their lifelong recovery. Earlier this year, the two joined forces to honor their shared passion at the TMF Veterans Retreat.
To support their mission of helping heroic men and women overcome physical obstacles, strengthen their families, and provide well-deserved rest and relaxation, TMF opened their Veterans Retreat in June 2017. Kelly McGaughey, TMF’s Program Director, shared the importance of this retreat for recovering warriors, saying “the Travis Mills Foundation prides itself on taking care of the whole family. We recognize that injuries change the dynamics of the entire family, and everyone is affected. We wanted to create a place where families could come and just enjoy each other in a barrier free environment.”
Luke’s Wings provided 17 flights for families attending the inaugural Alpha Week in June and will coordinate complimentary airfare to support their Caregiver Week later this Fall. “It is important for us to create strong partnerships with like-minded organizations supporting our wounded, ill and injured service members. The Travis Mills Foundation shares in our passion of supporting their recoveries, particularly through the love and support of loved ones. By doing our part to give these families a chance to rebuild and strengthen their relationships, we are aiding in just one part of their overall journey to recovery,” says Katie Currier, Program Director at Luke’s Wings.
“We’re incredibly grateful for generous donors and partner organizations like Luke’s Wings that help us accomplish [our] mission,” added McGaughey, saying “rehabilitation is a lifelong process; this is just part of their next step.”
